Marty Marks, President

Marks Brothers, Inc. has a long and proud tradition of construction and civil engineering projects in the South Florida region.  The business was established in 1937 by my grandfather, Morris, ‘Pop’, Marks under the name Miami Beach Fill and Soil Company.  The company closed briefly from 1941 to 1945 due to the enlistment of Pop’s three oldest sons in WWII.  After the war and the safe return of my uncles, Eugene, Paul and Herman the business resumed under the name Marks and Sons.

From 1945 until 1953 the company operated as Marks and Sons, primarily as a building demolition contractor and renter of heavy equipment.  In 1953, Stanley, my father, the fourth and youngest son, graduated from college and joined the company, and Pop retired.  With the new partnership, the family renamed the business Marks Brothers Company and proceeded to increase the scope of the firm’s services.

The Marks Brothers Company expanded into airport civil construction, building site preparation, underground utilities, roadway construction, concrete work, lime rock mining and landfill operation.  The asphalt paving expansion led to a joint venture and the creation of General Asphalt Co., Inc. in June 1966.  The General Asphalt Co., sold in 1991, remains one of the top asphalt-paving contractors in Florida.  The rock mining operation, which began in 1960, was sold to Florida Rock Industries in 1985.

With the retirement of one brother, Herman, in 1986, the remaining brothers reorganized the company into a Florida corporation, Marks Brothers, Inc..  From 1986 until 1990, the work at MIA, which had been continuous since the mid 1960s, became the main focus of our company.

Tragedy struck the company in April 1990, with the death of the youngest brother, my father, Stanley.  That same year his brother Paul retired due to cancer.  Then in May, 1991, the third brother, Eugene, suddenly passed away, leaving our company to make a quick transition from one generation to the next.

Since 1991 the Marks Brothers, Inc. has been successfully run by me, Marty Marks, and my two sisters, Kathleen Meyers and Maureen Piero.  During the years since, we have made many improvements, upgrades, equipment purchases and expansions, including the completion of a new headquarters and maintenance facility on four acres in Medley, Florida.

The company continues its commitment to expansion by extending the scope of their services to provide the installation of large-diameter storm drainage pipes and structures, utilizing divers when necessary, concrete paving, slip-form concrete curb and gutter, and roadway concrete.
